The New Mexico State Police have arrested a man suspected of shooting two Tucumcari men, according to a police press release.
Muziwokuthula “Muzie” Madonda, 33, of Chicago, was arrested Monday on two open counts of murder and tampering with evidence in relation to the deaths of Gabriel Baca, 37, and Bobby Gonzales, 57, both of Tucumcari.
The two men’s bodies were discovered Thursday in a room at the Tucumcari Inn, 1700 E. Route 66 Blvd.
The victims were killed by a single gunshot each, said State Police Lt. Eric Garcia.
“The autopsy revealed that Baca was shot in the chest and Gonzales was shot in the back,” Garcia said.
According to the press release, Madonda was arrested without incident in Conroe, Texas, near Houston, and will face felony counts in New Mexico. The release states Texas Rangers and the U.S. Marshals Service assisted state police in arresting Madonda.
Garcia said Baca and Gonzales are considered to be Tucumcari residents, but it was unclear whether or not they resided at the hotel.
State police aren’t prepared to release details of the case, according to Garcia, who declined to address who found the bodies and where they were located inside the hotel room.
Tucumcari police said they responded to the scene around noon after a family member of the victims saw them through the room window.
The case was turned over to state police, who arrived in the evening, according to a Friday press release.
