The annual Joe’s Boot Shop Calf Roping event continues to challenge the skills of ropers at every level while giving spectators a chance to see some of the top ranked calf ropers in the world.
“We will have several of the National Finals Rodeo’s qualifying calf ropers competing right here in Clovis,” said Coli Hunt, event coordinator.
The event is set for four days, April 28 through May 1 at the Curry County Events Center.
Hunt said last year the event had ropers representing 15 states with 876 ropers competing.
“We are looking to match that number if not best it,” Hunt said. “We have been getting calls about the event from all over the country.”
Hunt said for the first three days ropers can enter the contest as they arrive. He said there are competitions scheduled to challenge the skills of ropers at every level.
Additionally, the RFD-TV network will be broadcasting the event.
A few members of the Eastern New Mexico University’s rodeo team will be entering the events, said Albert Flinn, ENMU rodeo coach.
“Some of the ropers have mentioned signing up for the event,” Flinn said.
Flinn said the ENMU ropers who do enter the roping even will miss competing in a college rodeo against Tarleton State University at Stephenville, Texas.
On the final day of competition ropers must pre-register to compete in the professional AIRAT open event which will be held at 1 p.m., May 1.
“This is where the people will have the chance to see NFR top ranked ropers such as Clint, Clif and Tuf Cooper,” Hunt said.
Hunt said during past ropings there have been up to 18 NFR qualified ropers competing. He said many fans cannot travel to the NFR in Las Vegas, Nev., to see them in action.
“This is there chance to see these ropers live,” Hunt said. “Any fan of rodeo, wants that chance to see the best in action. This is a local event which gives many that opportunity.”
