ENMU narrows coaching pool for baseball

Freedom New Mexico

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University hopes to fill its open baseball head coaching position by June 15, athletic director Jeff Geiser said Tuesday.

ENMU is looking to replace Phil Clabaugh, who resigned after 20 seasons last month and was the program’s only coach after the sport was revived at the school in 1992.

Geiser said 97 applications for the position have been received. A committee consisting of Geiser, softball coach Lauren Sigwing and assistant athletic trainer Dustin Rush hoped to pare the list to 10 to 12 on Tuesday, then begin making contact with those candidates by phone.

If candidates are still interested, their references will be contacted. Around three to five candidates will be brought in late next week or early the following week for on-campus interviews.

Geiser said while it’s late to fill the position, the new coach should inherit good talent from the 2011 squad.

“Whoever is coming in (to take the position), we’ve lost the recruiting season,” Geiser said. “But the cupboard isn’t bare.”
