ALBUQUERQUE — The Curry County All-Stars took a 2-1 lead on a two-run single by Gabriel Montoya in the top of the fourth on Saturday, but Carlsbad came back with five runs in the bottom half and went on to a 9-2 first-round win in the state Juniors (ages 13-14) tournament.
The game was scheduled for Friday night, but was pushed back after rain suspended play. Curry County was to face Gallup in the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday night.
Victor and Tristan Velasquez hit singles for Curry County in the fourth and both came home on Montoya’s hit. Jimmy Garcia pitched into the fourth inning for Curry County, and Eli Cordova finished.
“We just had too many errors in that fourth inning, and we couldn’t come back,” Curry County manager Joe Garcia said. “But Carlsbad’s a good team.”
9-10 tournament — At Roswell, Silver City had a pair of four-run innings and held off a late Clovis American rally for an 11-6 first-round win on Saturday.
American is scheduled to face the Albuquerque South Valley in a 3 p.m. elimination game today.
Silver City scored four in the first and four in the third and led 11-2 before American’s Anthony Gonzalez hit a leadoff triple in the sixth, sparking a four-run rally. American had the bases loaded with one out, but couldn’t put any more runs on the board.
“We just started out a little nervous,” American manager Craig Rohrbach said. “Once we settled down, we started competing pretty well. I was proud we made a run at them.”
Rohrbach said his team nearly turned a triple play in the third inning when his son, Cole, speared a line drive back to the mound. Cole threw to Zane Morris to double a runner off third, but Morris’ throw to first baseman Trey Phillips was just a bit late.
10-11 tournament — Roosevelt County won its first game of the tournament on Saturday, cruising past Espanola Valley 10-2. No particulars on the game were available.
Roosevelt County returns to action at 10 a.m. today against Los Lunas in winners bracket play.
