The 39th annual Altrusa Home Tour will be held from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at four Portales homes.
According to Altrusa member Elly Helton, the tour is a fundraiser for the Altrusa Club’s community service projects, such as scholarships to the Eastern New Mexico University, the Reading is Fundamental Program, eye exams and glasses for individuals in need and more.
“I’m hoping to challenge everyone to sell, sell, sell,” Helton told her fellow members at Monday’s Altrusa meeting about the event tickets. “Ideally, I’d like to see $5,000 come from this event.”
The event has brought in around $3,800 in previous years. Helton said community members enjoy walking through homes to get ideas for their homes.
All of the members of the Altrusa Club agree that knowing they are helping others is what makes all their hard work worth it.
“It’s all about community service,” said another member, Judy Piepkorn. “The community directly benefits from the money we raise.”
Member Jo Anna Baker said the programs the club donates money to are local.
“When you see something like excitement on a little girl’s face, that’s the reward you get,” member Frankye King said as the group of women reminisced Monday about some reactions they’ve received from their donations. “We reach out all year.”
The group’s other major event is Holiday Happenings in December, which raises money for similar charities.
“These small acts of little things we do individually,” Piepkorn said. “Build up to making a large impact on the community.”
