Clovis men facing felony charge for wire thefts

Curry County Sheriff’s deputies on Friday said the arrests of two Clovis men ends a string of thefts from local farmers that began in June.

Dustin Martin, 35, and Lyle Gant, 57, are each charged with three third-degree felony counts of larceny, two fourth-degree felony counts of larceny, and one misdemeanor count of larceny. They are accused of stealing almost $19,000 in copper wire from irrigation sprinklers at farms across Curry County.

Deputies said their investigation determined that Martin and Gant are responsible for at least six thefts from different locations.

The wire was stripped from agricultural irrigation sprinklers and sold to metal recycling businesses.

Martin and Gant are being held at the Curry County Detention Center. Martin’s bond is $50,000 and Gant’s is $10,000.
