Nine new bicycles were added to 80 new toys Friday by Clovis Community College to end a month-long toy drive for area children in need.
The bicycles, donated by the Clovis Evening Lions Club, will be included with other toys collected at CCC and delivered to Rooney and Moon Broadcasting in support of its annual Secret Santa Initiative in eastern New Mexico.
The bikes were a last-minute surprise that made the college’s donation even more special, said Marcus Smith, vice chairman of the CCC Professional Employees Association, which spearheaded the toy drive.
“Every kid wants a bike,” Smith said. “That’s a Christmas you’re never going to forget; your first bike.”
The Clovis Evening Lions Club decided to donate the bikes after being contacted by Mona Burns, the CCC representative at Cannon Air Force Base. Burns asked the club if there was anything they could do to support the toy drive, and it responded with the bicycles.
“Our motto is ‘We Serve,’” said Lions President Joe Whitehurst as he looked at the line of bicycles in the commons area of CCC Friday afternoon. “It makes your heart feel good. This is the best feeling in the world.”
Beginning in November, Smith said collection boxes for new, unwrapped toys were placed around campus. Donations were managed and sorted by volunteers from the association, cosmetology, the Student Nurses Association and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
The Secret Santa Initiative received more than $26,000 in donations from area residents. According to Rooney-Moon Broadcasting, 12 families in the High Plains will be given Christmas gifts through the Secret Santa, with on-air presentations starting Friday.
