Obama’s use of force takes away freedom

Freedom New Mexico

Don’t be gay. Accept and pay for abortion. Do it my way, or suffer consequences.

This isn’t a debate, it’s a demand for action.

Our country was founded to carve out freedom, expand it within American borders and defend it to the death. We ended slavery, prohibition and gave women the right to vote. Yet, we’ve become a culture of intellectual intolerance — a place where agendas are imposed by bullies and government force. The week has provided three examples, two of bullies and one of force:

• Comedienne Ellen DeGeneres has a same-sex partner. The American Family Association dislikes this fact. Unwilling to merely defend its values in the marketplace of ideas, the organization advocates harm. It wants DeGeneres fired from her new job as spokesmodel for JC Penney.

“Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families,” reads a statement on the site. “DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there.”

Sure, they have a right to call for the actor’s head. Americans even have rights to picket funerals. The rest of us have the right to be repulsed by those who indulge such rights.

DeGeneres wasn’t hired to sell her sexual orientation. She was hired to sell clothing. Leave her alone, lest she advocate harm to traditional Christians and the choices they make.

• Another group of bullies refuses to tolerate the choices made by leaders of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. The foundation has a mission of helping women detect and treat breast cancer. To maximize survivors, they must concentrate their resources in such a manner as to maximize early detection. That means giving directly to organizations that provide cancer screenings.

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading abortion provider, provides no breast cancer screenings beyond what women can perform by themselves at home. The donations made little sense because Planned Parenthood doesn’t provide mammograms. In fact, a sting operation showed Planned Parenthood as nearly inept at making basic referrals.

Planned Parenthood, along with the organization’s most enthusiastic supporters, went apoplectic in response to Komen’s decision. Social networkers targeted Komen for annihilation. Activists campaigned to destroy Komen’s once-beloved signature-pink products and marketing materials.

“I took them off my personal car, the business car, off the doors in the office,” said Alyce Lee-Walker, a business owner in Pinehurst, N.C., as quoted in her local newspaper.

Money given by Komen to Planned Parenthood was supposedly a gift given freely. In our intolerant and hyper-politicized society, the gift has become an obligatory statement of support for abortion rights. Support Planned Parenthood or face your demise. Never mind that the money could be better spent, and would probably save more lives, if given for mammograms.

• Our third example involves an intolerant agenda imposed by force of law. President Barack Obama’s administration finalized orders last week that will force all Americans, with few exceptions, to buy health insurance plans that cover sterilizations and abortion pills without the burden of fees or co-pays. Obama is not merely ordering all Americans to accept abortion and contraception, he is demanding their support with mandatory purchases.

“This extends telling Americans they must buy health insurance to telling them they must buy products that are contrary to their religious beliefs,” Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said. “This is intolerable from a constitutional perspective.”

Government cannot avoid “interfering” with the free exercise of religion, and force purchases that interfere with religious values. One cannot freely exercise opposition to abortion while paying for abortion pills. Freedom of religion is under siege.

Freedom requires tolerance. Agendas that punish philosophies and religious beliefs, forcing individuals into transactions that violate their values, are exactly what this country was founded to defeat.
