Press release: Clovis police investigating Friday shooting
Clovis – March 3, 2012 – On Friday, March 2, 2012, at approximately 4:49 PM, Clovis Police were dispatched to the 1600 block of Mabry, in the hotel parking lot, on a report of shots being fired. Information was given there were two vehicles in the area where the gunshots were heard.
Officers responded to the scene to find the two vehicles had left the area. Officers did locate evidence a shooting took place.
At approximately 5:20 PM, Clovis Police Dispatch received a 911 emergency call for the 1300 block of Axtel on a report of a shooting victim.
Officers and Fire Rescue personnel responded to find twenty-six year Jerry Abeyta with gunshot wounds to his chest. Officers quickly identify Mr. Abeyta as the driver of a vehicle which was involved in the shooting incident on Mabry Drive.
Mr. Abeyta was transported to PRMC for treatment. His condition is described as serious, but in stable condition. Police were informed Mr. Abeyta was transferred to a hospital in Lubbock on Saturday, March 3, 2012, to receive further treatment for his wounds.
The incident is under investigation by the Clovis Police Special Operations Unit. At this time there is no clear motive for the incident and suspect(s) are being sought.
