WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Mallory Mooney’s one-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday gave Midwestern State a 6-5 win over Eastern New Mexico University and a sweep of their Lone Star Conference softball doubleheader.
The Mustangs (12-10, 2-1 LSC) also took the series after ENMU won Friday’s opener 6-3.
The Zias (5-12, 1-2) forced extra innings on freshman Katie Ramsay’s two-out, run-scoring single down the right field line in the seventh. ENMU had a chance to take the lead on Amy Smith’s two-out single to center in the eighth, but MSU’s Elana Bennett threw out Cassie Beene trying to score from second.
Ramsay (0-6) was saddled with the loss in each game in relief. Freshman Lindsi Glenn (10-6) was the winner in both games, throwing her second complete game of the series in the opener and working the final five innings in relief in the nightcap.
The Zias banged out 15 hits — including 11 off Glenn — in the second game, only one for extra bases. Freshman Liz Velasquez and Melissa Reynosa each had three hits.
ENMU got home runs from Smith and designated player Amanda Lale in the opener, the latter a two-run shot in the sixth to tie the score 5-5. MSU loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the inning, then got a go-ahead sacrifice fly from Kelley Schaefer and a two-ouot, two-run double to left-center from designated player Courtney Ford.
Ford also homered in each game, giving her five for the season. Her three-run shot in the opener erased a 2-0 ENMU lead in the second, and she blasted a two-run, sixth-inning homer in the nightcap to stake the Mustangs to a 5-4 lead.
The Zias return to action with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday against Texas-Permian Basin at Zia Softball Field.
