Hounds fall to WT in opener

CANYON, Texas — Unbeaten Justin Kuks pitched eight solid innings and left fielder Justin Smith hit two of West Texas A&M's four home runs Friday night as the Buffaloes beat Eastern New Mexico University 8-1 in the opener of a four-game Lone Star Conference baseball series.

Kuks (9-0) stranded 10 ENMU baserunners and was helped by three double plays. The Hounds left two more on in the ninth against reliever Chad McIln.

Meantime, Smith and Eric Dorton opened the bottom of the fifth with home runs and Justin Henderson added an RBI single to push WT (28-15, 15-10 LSC) in front 4-0. The Buffs also got solo shots from Kendall Boone in the seventh and Smith in the eighth.

Five players had two hits each for ENMU (12-31, 2-22). Senior first baseman Mitch Wolfe hit his fourth homer of the season against Kuks leading off the sixth.
