Letters to the editor: Obama views must have evolved

Guess which sweet talker made this speech in 2006:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government's reckless fiscal policies.

"Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.

"America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

Yes, it was Sen. Barack H. Obama.

Homosexuals need to repent

I am writing this letter in response to Lt. Col. Ross Whitmore's Air Force speech at Eastern New Mexico University on April 14:

The word of God is loaded with verses warning us about the sin of homo-sexuality, usually called sodomy or lesbianism.

The Bible says in Jude 7 that Sodom and Gomorrah indulged in gross immorality and were exhibited as an example in the undergoing punishment of eternal fire. The Bible says it is an abomination for a man to lie with a man as with a woman, or a woman to lie with a woman as with a man. Both of them have committed a detestable act (Lev. 18:22, 20:13).

The New Testament states those who practice homosexuality will not enter the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). The Bible in Romans indicates homosexuality is the result of the final rebellion of the people against God.

From a biblical point of view, the rise of homosexuality is a sign that society is in the last stages of decay.

Of all the sins — lying, stealing, etc., — can you think of any other in which God himself wiped out entire cities to remove that sin?

God said in his Word that whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus shall be saved.

Those who repent of their sins, confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in their heart that God raised Jesus from the dead will be saved.

God loves everyone and he loves homosexuals. He does not want anyone to go to hell.

Choose Life and not death.

Jesus said to the sinner: I forgive you. Go and sin no more (Romans 10).

My family will continue to pray for Lt. Col. Whitmore and his family.

Spears' campaign not endearing

I'm voting for Pat Woods.

I am not personally acquainted with him, but I have read his responses to mailings sent out by his opposition.

This political campaign with its nasty anti-Woods mailings that appear practically every day do not endear me to Angie Spears in the least. I would prefer the mailings stress Spears' platform, so I assume that she has none nor any qualifications for the job.

If the only way one can win an election is by knocking his or her opponent and not informing constituents why he or she is the best person for the job they don't get my vote at all. Actually Spears and Woods seem to have the same general agenda but this knowledge came from the newspaper, certainly not from any mailings by the Spears campaign.

I'm not a political analyst by any means, but if I'm irritated by dirty politics and negative mailings then most likely others are and it may not increase Spears' chances of winning the election.
