Highlands pulls away late to beat Hounds in opener

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Junior quarterback Taylor Genuser threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns and New Mexico Highlands pulled away with three touchdowns in the final 8 1/2 minutes to beat Eastern New Mexico University 42-14 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Highlands failed to score on its first six possessions and the Greyhounds took a 14-0 lead with second-quarter touchdown runs of 1-yard by running back Christian Long and quarterback Wesley Wood.

Highland countered with a 55-yard drive capped by Genuser's 25-yard TD pass to Kevon Williams with 2:40 left in the half. Then junior defensive back DiAmaal Holmes tied it by returning a fumble by Wood on a sack 60 yards for a score with just over nine minutes left in the third period.

The turnover came after ENMU's Willie Riley intercepted Genuser at the Highlands 36 on the first play from scrimmage after halftime.

Wood then drove the Hounds from their own 35 deep into Cowboys territory, but a 19-yard reception by Corey Thomas resulted in a fumble which was recovered by linebacker Yusuf Mohammed at the NMHU 3. Genuser led the Cowboys near midfield and then found wide receiver Trent Hicks on a 49-yard scoring play for a 21-14 lead late in the period.

Genuser threw TD passes of 70 yards to John Webster and 27 yards to Hicks in the final period before De'joshua Johnson finished off the scoring on a 45-yard punt return with three minutes left.

ENMU outgained the Cowboys 143-58 on the ground, led by Derek Kendall-Campbell with 55 yards on 13 attempts. Webster had seven receptions for 130a yards for the Cowboys.

Wood went 9-of-19 for 77 yards and was sacked five times before coming out of the game in the final period. The Hounds had four sacks against Genuser, totaling 21 yards.
