ALBUQUERQUE — It was a tough day for Clovis High's soccer teams Friday.
St. Michael's jumped to a 3-0 lead late in the half and cruised past the CHS boys 5-2 while the Lady Wildcats fell behind 4-0 at halftime and absorbed a 4-1 loss to Piedra Vista.
The matches were semifinals of a four-team tournament being hosted by Sandia Prep. In third-place clashes today, the Lady Cats face Moriarty at 8:30 a.m. while the Wildcats take on Piedra Vista at 10:30 p.m.
Goals by Nicolas Volker late in the first half and Josh Otero with about 25 minutes left brought the CHS boys (6-7) to within 3-2, but the Horsemen pulled away with two goals in the final 13 minutes.
Meantime, Madilyn Tanner and Erica Briseno each scored twice in the first half for Piedra Vista and the Lady Panthers cruised to victory.
"They (Lady Panthers) were very physical," CHS girls coach Traci Sievers said. "If we'd played the first half like we did the second half, though, it would've been a lot better. Our intensity was better." Junior Carrie Sharp's goal got Clovis on the board in the 59th minute, with assists from Alexis O'Leary and Melaya Flores.
