Texico (11-5) at Clovis (11-6)
7 p.m. today at The Rock
On the air: KCLV-AM 1240, KTQM-FM 99.9
Last time out: The Wildcats are coming off losing a weekend homestand, 75-54 against Class 5A top-ranked La Cueva and 68-66 in overtime against then-No. 4 Eldorado.
Clovis remains eighth in this week's Maxpreps.com poll, while La Cueva remains first and the Eagles dropped to sixth.
Texico, ranked sixth in Class 2A, is coming off a 74-61 on win Saturday at Eunice.
Last meeting: The teams have not met in recent history.
Notable: Clovis had part of a home-and-home series with Espanola Valley cut due to a Sundevils schedule overbooking. The Sundevils would have been forced to forfeit their district finale if Clovis didn't pick up a different opponent, and coach Matt King said the Wolverines were one of few teams to have a corresponding open date. Additionally, the game helps the Wildcats work into a Tuesday/Friday schedule that will be the standard for the rest of the regular season. The Wildcats host Class 3A top-ranked Hope Christian on Friday.
For Texico, which opens District 4-2A play on Friday at Santa Rosa, the game was a rare chance to play up. Texico had no Class 4A or 5A teams on its schedule, although it played Class 3A Portales Friday night.
"You don't want to play four or five 5A teams and demoralize your kids," Texico coach Ty Thatcher said, "but it's an opportunity to play against a good team and play quality basketball. So we took it."
