Commencement is just around the corner for this year's Clovis Community College graduates.
According to Lisa Spencer, director of marketing and public affairs at the college, 266 students will be awarded a certificate and 258 students will graduate with an Associate's degree in a ceremony to be held at the Clovis Civic Center this Friday at 6 p.m.
Spencer said this year's graduating class is among the largest she has seen.
Philomene Stella of Clovis was chosen to be a speaker at Clovis Community College's graduation ceremony Friday at the Clovis Civic Center.
"It is nice to see strong numbers," she said. "We are very proud of our faculty and staff."
Student speakers for the ceremony include Ami Kowalski, a nursing graduate, and Philomene Stella, a liberal arts graduate.
According to Spencer, the student speakers were chosen based on grade point average and participation within their program of study, and have proven to be all-around exemplary students.
For Stella, a 74-year-old retiree, finding out she was chosen to speak in front of her fellow students came as a big surprise.
"I was speechless," she said. "I didn't think that would happen because I don't think I have that much to tell."
Stella was driven to go back to school after the passing of her husband.
"My kids were grown and I had nothing else to do," she continued.
A history major, Stella will continue her education and complete her bachelor's degree at Eastern New Mexico University next spring.
While she doesn't have immediate plans to utilize her new degree, Stella said she will likely continue going to school and learning for as long as she can.
"I plan to stay alive," she said.
In addition to the student speakers, Col. Heather LoBue, staff judge advocate at Cannon Air Force Base, will also address this year's graduates and ceremony guests.
This week's graduation activities also include a GED ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, as well as a nurses pinning at 11 a.m. on Friday. All events will be held at the Clovis Civic Center.
