The Curry County Relay for Life committee is working hard to make up for a fundraising shortfall from this year's event.
According to Dorothy Nelson, community relationship manager for the American Cancer Society, sponsorships and team donations from the May 10 event total $107,750.
"The goal for calendar year 2013 is $130,000," she said. "So the shortfall is significant."
Fewer teams than last year, the loss of critical committee members and a rainstorm during the event are likely to blame for this year's funds deficit, according to Nelson.
The local Relay for Life committee has decided to move ahead with a Finish the Fight campaign, holding fundraising activities until their goal is achieved.
Event chair Kizzy Maloni said the committee hasn't yet solidified plans for those fundraising activities, but they would like to bring the community together to reach their goal.
"We spend a lot of the year making money for Relay for Life within our own teams and competing against other teams," she said. "But now we need to pull together and unite in order to get the money that we're behind in."
Maloni said the event committee is meeting Tuesday to discuss ideas, and anyone from the community is invited to get involved.
While the Relay for Life event was held last month, donors are encouraged to give money online through the end of August.
"Even though the event is over, many teams are choosing to continue fundraising," said Nelson. "We are counting on them to help us get to the goal."
