Curry County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested an employee of the Curry County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday on charges she brought marijuana and cigarettes into the jail for an inmate.
Erin Shields, 22, faces charges of distribution of marijuana and bringing contraband into a place of imprisonment. Both are fourth-degree felonies.
No contact information was available for Shields, who was released Wednesday on $10,000 bond.
According to a release from the sheriff’s office:
• Sheilds communicated with an inmate and said she was willing to bring in tobacco and marijuana. She told the inmate where her personal vehicle was so a third party could leave the package in her vehicle.
• Sheilds was intercepted entering the facility with the contraband by investigators with the sheriff’s office.
• The county terminated her employment upon the arrest.
The termination brings the jail to 36 staffers — eight down from a full staff, according to Interim Jail Administrator Tori Sandoval.
Sandoval said she has reason to believe the Tuesday arrest was not an isolated incident.
“It’s a possibility there could be more such investigations,” Sandoval said.
