Locally sourced, farm-fresh produce will soon be readily available thanks to the upcoming opening of farmers markets in Clovis and Portales.

Margie Plummer manages the Portales Farmers Market and Clovis Farmers Market, and said this year’s produce offerings will start off small.

“It’s just so early right now,” she explained. “With the way the weather was this year, there’s not a lot of stuff ready.”

Plummer is also a grower and vendor and explained that there will be a lot more to offer within a few weeks.

She and her family harvest and sell everything from black-eyed peas and okra to cucumbers, watermelons and sweet potatoes throughout the growing season.

“Last year we had about 10 or 12 vendors,” Plummer said. “We should have about that this year, also.”

Curry County Extension Office Ag Agent Luther Dunlap said he believes having farmers markets in the area is extremely important for local consumers and farmers alike.

“I think one of the things we need to focus on is getting fruits and vegetables back on the dinner table.” he said. “With farmers markets, it’s easy to do that.”

Due to road construction, the Portales market will be moving from its downtown location to the parking lot at Big Valley Auto for the season.

Vendors at both markets will accept cash and checks, as well as WIC vouchers and senior nutrition checks.

The Clovis Farmers Market will open Saturday and the Portales Farmers Market will follow suit on Monday. Both markets will stay open until the end of October.
