Wildcats pull off road win at Espanola Valley

ESPANOLA — The Clovis Wildcats never found much of a rhythm, thanks to a game with 76 total free throws.

But they did find a 69-62 win before they left Espanola Valley, and that was good enough for Thursday night.

Willie McCray led all scorers with 27 points, including a 14-of-17 effort from the line, as the Wildcats claimed their second-straight victory.

“It was a weird game,” Clovis coach Matt King said. “There was no flow, no rhythm. I don’t know how many fouls were called, but there were a ton on both ends.”

King said the Wildcats (8-5) played well early in the second quarter, but then got taken out of any type of rhythm with fouls on what seemed to be at least a half-dozen consecutive plays.

“We ended up making some tough plays,” King said, “and we’re glad to get out of there with a win.”

Traivon Sopila had 12 points, while Marquese Gaither added nine.

Jared Garduno scored 23 to lead three Sundevils in double figures, and also had a 15-of-17 performance from the line.

It total, the Wildcats shot 28-of-45 from the line while the Sundevils (8-7) were 25-of-31.

Clovis is back home against Onate on Saturday, with an early evening tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
