Lady Cats cruise past Alamogordo

ALAMOGORDO — Ever the perfectionist, Clovis High girls basketball coach Jeff Reed said the Lady Wildcats could’ve played better on Saturday despite winning big.

Junior guard Danni Williams scored 23 points and junior post Shelby Jones added 15 as CHS improved to 14-0 with a 69-24 rout of Alamogordo.

“We missed a lot of easy stuff,” Reed said. “It seemed like we didn’t get off the bus right away.

“We were a little lethargic, but we seemed to heat up as we went.”

The Lady Cats lost junior guard Nichele Hyman late in the first quarter with a broken nose after she collided with teammate Kyleigh Guthals as they chased a loose ball. Reed said he hopes Hyman, who already had six points when she went out, will be available next weekend when the team travels to Albuquerque for a pair of games.

“I thought Nichele was on her sway to a good game,” Reed said. “It took a little wind out of our sails.”

Not enough to make much difference, however.

The Lady Cats led 21-8 at the quarter, and the margin only got bigger.

“We didn’t shoot the ball real well, but we got a lot of stuff going to the basket,” Reed said.

Junior guard Monique Hernandez scored seven points for the Lady Tigers (6-9), who were coming off a blowout loss at home on Friday night against Hobbs. Alamo finished the game with just seven field goals.
