Phillip Williams rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries and the Curry County Cats outlasted the El Paso Sun City Reapers 14-13 on Sunday in New Mexico Premier League football at Leon Williams Stadium.

Williams scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, then put the Cats (3-1, 2-1 NMPL) in front for good with a 5-yard run in the fourth period. Michael Johnson caught a 2-point conversion pass from Ryan Autrey after the first score.

The Sun City Reapers, who had not been scored on in four games before Sunday, took a 6-0 lead with a touchdown early in the game, then regained a 13-8 advantage with a score late in the half.

Linebacker Travis Phillips recovered two fumbles for the Cats, while defensive end/outside linebacker Morris Sharp had a pair of third-quarter sacks and also recovered an El Paso fumble after Williams’ fourth-quarter TD. Safety Daniel Pleasant intercepted a pass with just under three minutes left and the Cats ran out most of the remaining time.

On special teams, Quinn Culliver blocked an El Paso field goal attempt in the third quarter while Mario Caswell booted a 60-yard punt late in the first half.

The Cats have added a non-league home game at 1 p.m. this Sunday against the Las Vegas (N.M.) Rebels, scheduled for 1 p.m. They will close the regular season with three road games.
