ALBUQUERQUE — Junior guard Danni Williams is one of three Clovis High girls basketball players to earn Class 5A all-state honors from the New Mexico Basketball Coaches Association.
Williams, who led the Lady Wildcats to a 30-2 record and 5A state title last year and a 29-1 mark this season, was named to the first team for the second year in a row. She averaged 24 points and nearly six rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Lady Cats reached the state semifinals before being upended by eventual champion Volcano Vista.
Meantime, senior guard Brandi Gomez and junior post Shelby Jones were on the second team in Class 5A.
Gomez for the girls and senior guard Willie McCray for the CHS boys were chosen to the South squads for NMHSCA all-star games at West Mesa H.S. The girls game is set for 7:30 p.m. on June 6 and the boys contest at 7:30 p.m. on July 31.
Several area athletes were named to the NMHSCA small-school all-state squads as well. Texico senior Miguel Reyna and his sister, sophomore Brianna Reyna, were chosen first team on their respective Class 2A squads after leading their teams to state championship-game appearances last month.
In Class 1A, Melrose junior Caley Barnard was a first-team selection.
Miguel Reyna was tabbed for the boys Class 2A/3A all-star game at West Mesa, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on June 7, while Fort Sumner’s Michael Giannini for the boys and Angelica Torres for the girls were chosen to play in the Class 1A/B contests, also at West Mesa — girls on June 6 and boys on July 31 at 6 p.m., just ahead of the 4A/5A games.
