• Ray Westerman will retire later this month
after 39 years with CFD.
With eight applications in hand, Clovis city officials plan to start the interview process to replace retiring Fire Chief Ray Westernman.
City Manager Joe Thomas said four applicants are from New Mexico, with three of those being from Clovis and the surrounding area, and the remaining four are from out of state.
“All of the applicants have previous fire experience.” Thomas said.
The initial review of applications has been handled by Thomas, and the interviews will be conducted by Thomas, Westerman, and one other Clovis senior staff member that has yet to be named.
Thomas, who has the final decision on naming a new fire chief, said applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but will proceed with interviews in the coming weeks.
Thomas said, “We have two interviews scheduled for next Monday. Two more are scheduled during the week, one Tuesday and one Wednesday.”
Thomas added that the timeline for naming a new chief will be determined by the interview process.
In the event that the position has not been filled by the time Westerman leaves, Thomas said that a senior officer from within the department will be named as Interim Chief until a new Fire Chief is chosen.
Westerman served with the city fire department for 39 years, including the last 10 as fire chief. His final day is May 19.
