Clovis Community College’s ninth year of bringing the world to Clovis kicks off Sept. 26 with a concert commemorating the Beatles.
It’s all part of the college’s annual Cultural Arts Series.
Cultural Art Director Christy Mendoza said she looks for variety when scheduling acts for the series.
“We say we’re bringing the world to you so we want to bring a little bit of everything,” Mendoza said.
The schedule this season includes dance events, swing, mariachi, Broadway, opera, classical and other music genres.
Mendoza said the series is a gift from the college to the community.
“But you’ve heard the phrase it takes a village to raise a child? Well, it takes a village to bring you a cultural arts series,” Mendoza said.
She said local sponsors and season ticket holders make the series possible.
“The series fills a need and a void that we have out here,” Mendoza said. “Unless you can drive off to Albuquerque or Lubbock or wherever, you won’t be able to see the things we’re bringing here. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the big things they have in bigger cities.”
The opening event is “Yesterday — A Tribute to the Beatles.”
The show recreates historic performances of the Beatles from 1964 to 1974. It also chronicles the iconic group’s career from the early years to the Sergeant Pepper era.
Mendoza said the series also brings cultural outreach to the Clovis Municipal Schools. The Santa Fe Opera, a return from last year’s schedule, and the Lula Washington Dance Theatre are two acts that will perform for students.
