Curry County Commissioners adopted an ordinance Tuesday splitting the magistrate judge election into two districts.
The ordinance was drafted in response to an order from a federal judge and is effective Oct. 1.
The federal order stems from a lawsuit challenging the at-large system as more difficult for minority candidates to win judicial elections.
Commissioner Caleb Chandler issued the sole dissenting vote.
