Joe’s Boot Shop is bringing calf roping action and chuck wagon cooking together this weekend at the Curry County Fairgrounds.
The fifth annual Joe’s Boot Shop Calf Roping begins Friday at the Curry County Events Center.
Chris Weber, advertising representative with Joe’s Boot Shop, said organizers are expecting large crowds because the event will be held indoors this year. Weber said big prizes and big names are also expected to draw crowds.
New to the event is the Colt Cluck Memorial Championship calf roping for ages 19 and under.
Weber said the event often draws about 500 competitors, but they are expecting more this year. In past years, 60 have signed up to compete in open roping. There are 90 already signed up, Weber said Wednesday.
Weber said five world champion ropers and 21 National Finals Rodeo finalists will be competing at the event on Sunday.
“We’re drawing some pretty big names in the rodeo industry,” she said. “We do this to bring people to Clovis.”
Sunday’s events begin at 8 a.m. and include three match ropings, a double muggin and the open roping.
Competitions on Friday and Saturday, which are free to the public, begin at 9 a.m.
Joe’s Boot Shop is also sponsoring the second annual chuck wagon cook-off, which will take place Saturday at the Curry County Fairgrounds. The gates open at 8 a.m. and judging will take place at 11:45 a.m. The public will be served at noon.
Wilma Fulgham, who is in charge of the event, said she is expecting 14 wagons to compete this year. Each wagon must cook six different items and is judged on each individually.
The overall winner is presented with the Duke of the Dutch Oven bronze statue which is sculpted by local artist Curtis Fort.
There will also be a chuck wagon breakfast served before cowboy church at the fairgrounds at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
Proceeds from the cook-off go to the Miss Rodeo New Mexico Pageant and Scholarships fund.
Tickets for both events can be purchased at Joe’s Boot Shop. Chuck Wagon Cook-off tickets can also be purchased at the Clovis and Curry County Chamber of Commerce.
