Cannon Air Force Base staged a mock disaster Thursday as part of an emergency readiness evaluation.
The base conducts quarterly emergency drills and a yearly drill based on a natural disaster, according to Cannon Public Affairs spokesman Airman Elliot Sprehe.
The latest drill tested the base’s readiness in the event of a tornado, according to Sprehe.
“We try to focus them around tornadoes just because of the area we’re in,” he said referring to the March 2007 tornadoes that hit Clovis.
The drill started off with a tornado warning, then escalated to a tornado sighting.
The exercise started around 8 a.m. and lasted until noon.
Sprehe said extra scenarios that result from the natural disaster, such as a fuel leak and damaged buildings, were included in the exercise.
