Sexual assault victims can now call a hotline for access to resources.
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners of Eastern New Mexico and the Portales Lions Club have teamed up to provide the Eastern New Mexico Sexual Violence Hotline.
Victims of assault who are medically stable can call the number and speak to a SANE dispatcher and activate the SANE system.
In the past, victims either had to call 911 or report to an emergency room to access a sexual assault nurse, but the hotline gives them a single stop for access to the program and resources.
The hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After calling the hotline, a SANE nurse will schedule an appointment and meet the victim at either the SANE facility in Clovis or Portales.
SANE services are free.
SANE nurses receive specialized training to conduct medical exams, and provide prevention medication against sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.
They also serve as a referral base for community resources and counseling services, and can provide expert testimony to aid in the prosecution process.
Victims of sexual assault can reach SANE at (575) 226-SANE (7263).
