Clovis, NM ~ Ninth Judicial District Attorney Matthew Chandler announced today Anthony Morgan, age 36, was convicted after a two day jury trial on one (1) count of First Degree Kidnapping, one (1) count of Criminal Sexual Penetration, two (2) counts of Aggravated Assault, one (1) count of Aggravated Battery, and six (6) counts of Battery Against a Household Member.

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on October 15, 2006, when it was learned that the Defendant began an argument with the victim which turned very violent.  The Defendant forced the victim to drive him around Clovis for several hours while beating her and threatening her with a gun.  After assaulting the victim numerous times, the defendant drove the victim to a secluded spot in the county where he violently raped her.  The victim testified she tried numerous times to escape but was unable to do so.  The defendant continued to hold the victim against her will for the next two days and assault her before finally releasing her.  It was at that time the Clovis Police Department learned of the incident and opened an investigation that led to the arrest of Anthony Morgan.

District Attorney Matthew Chandler stated, “Deputy District Attorney Brian Stover and the Clovis Police Department did an excellent job preparing this case and holding the defendant accountable for this heinous assault.  The D.A.’s Office is prepared to ask the court to sentence the defendant next week to the maximum time of 59 years in prison for his actions.”

The Honorable Teddy L. Hartley presided over the jury trial and Deputy District Attorney Brian Scott Stover prosecuted the case for the State.  The Defendant’s sentencing hearing will be held next week, where he faces a maximum sentence of fifty-nine (59) years in the Department of Corrections.
