Homemade knives, a “hoard” of prescription drugs, marijuana and tattooing equipment were among items found in a shakedown at the Curry County Adult Detention Center Friday morning, according to county officials.

Detention officers joined with members of the Curry County Sheriff’s office in what was described as a “major shakedown” of the maximum security housing unit around 9 a.m., a news release said.

The area houses 26 high-risk inmates, including those recaptured after the Aug. 24 escape of eight men from the facility.

Detention center Administrator Lois Bean said the shakedown is “but one of several procedures being implemented” as a result of a recent security assessment she conducted.

The shakedown also found several items of unauthorized clothing.
