Spread the love.
That’s the mantra behind a special project developed by Lukas Cash.
Cash is a student and special programs coordinator in distance education at Eastern New Mexico University. He is building a weblog called URLoved that lets people tell their loved ones how much they mean to them.
“Love is something that needs a little more attention in order to build better communities for the future,” Cash said.
The idea for his weblog came from a similar weblog called Post Secret, where secrets can be posted anonymously.
“But it got depressing and I wanted to do something a little more upbeat,” Cash said. “A lot of the world’s problems can be traced back to not acknowledging love.”
Cash said he decided to make love the theme of his weblog because people only believe in two kinds of love.
“People think of the really trite, silly, commercialized love or don’t believe there is any altruistic love anymore,” he said. “People don’t believe there is a real love anymore. That’s the problem with it. You don’t have to be a nice person to have a lot of love in your heart.”
Cash worked on developing the concept last semester and plans to launch the weblog Monday.
Cash said he built a community Website because that is where many people devote a lot of their Web activity.
To post on URLoved, a person can send in a decorated post card and Cash will post it on the weblog. A post can be left anonymously or can include the name of the sender. The sender can also choose to have Cash send an e-mail alert to the person it’s for.
Becca Gossett of Portales is one of the 10 people who has sent Cash a decorated post card for the maiden voyage of the site.
Gossett, 23, sent the post for her husband, Chase, who she has been married to for two years. But after thinking about it, she said she’d love to write posts for several people in her life.
“You don’t just have to send it to your husband or boyfriend. You can send it to anyone. I was thinking about writing one for my mom,” she said.
Gossett said she thinks Cash’s weblog is a good way to promote love and goodness.
“During hard times or any time really, people tend to focus on the bad things and forget those that they love,” Gossett said. “I don’t think the people we love know all the time. Everyone wants to know that someone loves them.”
“And just reading the blog, even if the posts aren’t for you, it just makes you feel good to know that people love each other.”
