La Casita Elementary School awarded for bilingual program

La Casita Elementary School was awarded $3,000 from the Public Education Department in recognition of its outstanding bilingual program, according to a news release.
La Casita was one of 31 schools in the state recognized at the Bilingual Education Awards on Jan. 30.
Schools were selected based upon English language learner student progress toward English proficiency and academic improvement.

Clovis High student to compete in statewide poetry contest

Clovis High School student Sarah Frost will compete in New Mexico’s Poetry Out Loud contest on Sunday.
For the first time, New Mexico’s competition was statewide with more than  1,000 youth participating at the class level.
The state winner receives $200, plus $500 for their school library for the purchase of poetry books, and an all expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete at the National Finals.
The National Champion receives $20,000 in prizes.

Scholarship program deadline nears

The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Survivor College Scholarship Program deadline is Feb. 20.
The program provides financial assistance to young cancer survivors as they pursue their post secondary education.
The possible lifetime award is for up to $10,000 per student, offered in increments of $2,500 per academic year.
