Relay for Life of Portales is kicking off its annual March fundraiser with a registration party from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Pizza Hut in Portales.
The community effort raises money for the American Cancer Society and cancer research. Pledge sheets and other information will be available at the kick-off.
“Relay for Life has always been a youth event,” said Chairwoman Cathy Hess said. “This year we wanted to try something different. We have a great number of young people who help us out that have worked with the relay before.”
Events for the annual relay are setup and put together by people who have been touched by cancer some way or another in their life.
“I lost my mother to cancer when I was five years old,” Hess said. “So, I think people get involved with this because they have a story.”
Hess moved here for her job and recently became the store manager at the Pizza Hut in Portales.
The relay is March 20-21 at Greyhound Arena, where it has been held the past nine years. The event raised more than $22,000 last year.
