Clovis Mayor Pro-Tem Randy Crowder has organized a study session for commissioners on the responsibilities and powers of the city commission.

The session will be conducted by City Attorney David Richards at 8 a.m. today at City Hall.

“I enjoy educational opportunities and Mr. Richards has a wealth of knowledge to share with us,” Crowder said. “It will make us all better commissioners.”

Commissioners Juan Garza and Ron Edwards said they will join Crowder at the session. Commissioners Robert Sandoval, Fred Van Soelen and Isidro Garcia and Mayor Gayla Brumfield said they do not plan to attend. Commissioners Len Vohs and Chris Bryant did not return phone calls inquiring about their plans.

Crowder said scheduling conflicts prevented the study session being held during the week. “This started four or five months ago and is just now coming to fruition,” he said.

Among the topics covered in today’s session is the home rule power that allows the city commission to govern independent of state statutes, according to Crowder.
