CHS grad named teacher of year
Clovis High school graduate Blythe Tuner has been named the 2008-2009 New Mexico Teacher of the Year by the New Mexico Public Education Department, according to a department news release.
She is the daughter of Jim and Carolyn Turner of Clovis.
Turner graduated from Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University and is currently a student in the University of New Mexico doctoral program.
Turner is a bilingual education teacher and Native American liaison with the Rio Rancho public schools.
School staff working fundraiser
About 30 members of the James Bickley Elementary School staff will work at McDonald’s from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday as a fundraiser for the school library.
Todd Morris, the school’s principal, said the school will receive 25 percent of profits during the two hours of work.
Morris said he is hoping the fundraiser will raise $1,300.
CCS gets full accreditation
Clovis Christian School received a full term of accreditation Tuesday from the Association of Christian Schools International regional accrediting commission for the Rocky Mountain States, according to a commission press release.
According to school superintendent Steven Schultz, accreditation status allows the school to develop standards by which to govern the school and gives diplomas issued by the school more legitimacy with universities and colleges.
Former Clovis student honored
Jason Seefeld of Clovis has been chosen as one of 96 Texas Tech students for 2008 as Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, according to a Texas Tech press release.
Seefeld is studying business at Texas Tech.
The Who’s Who selection criteria is based on academic achievement, leadership and service. This honor is conferred by more than 1,000 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Piano major places first
Chenggang Wang, a junior piano performance major at Eastern New Mexico University, won first place in the Young Artist’s Piano Competition for New Mexico, according to an ENMU press release.
Wang, a native of Changji, Xiagjiang, China, is studying piano with John Olsen, professor of music.
The next step for Wang is the Regional Young Artist’s Competition in January at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he will compete against the winners of six other states.
Wayland holding college preview
Wayland Baptist University is holding a preview day, called Gold Rush, on Saturday.
The event is for high school juniors, seniors and possible transfer students.
The event includes tours, an academic fair, seminars and mock classes.
The event begins at 8:30 a.m.

Scholarship event on way
The New Mexico’s Junior Miss Scholarship program will be holding their annual statewide event in January in Grants.
The event is open to any young woman graduating from a New Mexico high school next spring.
New Mexico's Junior Miss Scholarship Program is an official preliminary of America’s Junior Miss, a scholarship program for high school senior females.
Each year, AJM makes available more than $33 million in scholarship opportunities to high school seniors.
