A Clovis man is in serious condition after he was shot by Texas law enforcement in Curry County midday Saturday, according to New Mexico State Police.

Officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Friona and Parmer County pursued JaWayne Helfferich, 39, of Clovis,  from Texas into Curry County after he fled from a traffic stop on U.S. 60 southwest of Friona, according to New Mexico State Police Capt. Jimmy Glascock.

Glascock said the approximate 40-mile pursuit, which started just after 10 a.m. CST, crossed through Friona, into New Mexico and ended around Curry Roads 21 and O, northeast of Ranchvale, when the suspect was shot about 10 a.m. MST.

Shots were also fired by officers from Texas DPS and Parmer County on State Road 108 and Curry Road 29 during the chase, Glascock said.

Glascock declined to identify the officers involved, reasons for opening fire or why Helfferich fled, citing an ongoing investigation.

Saturday afternoon, investigators with the State Police Criminal Investigation Division arrived on scene and took over the investigation, Glascock said.

Officers in “fresh pursuit” are permitted to cross jurisdictional boundaries, Glascock said.

Glascock said the number of shots fired by officers, the number of times the suspect was shot and whether or not the suspect was armed are all issues being investigated by state police.

Helfferich was flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock. He is charged with evading arrest or detention in a vehicle. A female passenger was not charged.

Calls made to the Texas DPS and Parmer County Sheriff's Department were not immediately returned.
