Richard Lopes, a longtime Project: Reader Reaction participant brought to eastern New Mexico by Cannon Air Force Base, e-mails to report the military has moved him to Las Vegas.
"I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the eastern plains. I don't speak from the viewpoint of a stereotypical middle-aged Baptist that naturally seemed to love the area either. I moved there when I was 25 years old and was single most of the time.
"And unlike most of the people of my demographic, I will tell anyone that'll listen that the eastern plains are one of America's hidden gems -- from the friendly people to the county fairs and a warm community that actually embraced the military friendship.
"I just want to say thanks and farewell. I miss it. Take care and enjoy your great town."
