A recent Project: Reader Reaction question asked whether DWI checkpoints are the most effective means of preventing alcohol-related accidents.
Responses:
• “I think that the checkpoints are fine but I would actually set up outside of bars where the drinking could go too far. It would be ideal to stop the driving before it happens, but you can’t regulate away all our freedoms.”
— Jim Sitterly
• “I do agree that checkpoints to reduce the number of drunken drivers should be held, but not nightly and without disclosing where the checks are going to be made. They definitely reduce the number of drunken drivers.”
— Mac McDonald
• “I’m in favor of trying to stop (DWI) ... BEFORE they get into the vehicles. If that means patrolling by law officers near bars from 11 p.m. to closing, and watching for those who display drunkenness, then I would rather that be where the resources be spent.”
— Bob Baker
• “... Troopers keep it up! As a matter of fact the first offense should be the first and last. ... Jail time should be mandatory with no bail for six months ... The second time caught DUI should mandate 15 years incarceration at a tent jail in the middle of the our good ol’ Southwest desert.”
— Maria Cheverez
• “I think they should quit publicizing where they are going to have these checkpoints. And I think they should only be concerned with driver’s licenses and not hold up a person if they have not been drinking but are having trouble finding their proof of registration and insurance card in their glovebox. ...”
— Janet Mason
