ALBUQUERQUE — Ben Ray Lujan has won the Democratic nomination for Congress in northern New Mexico’s 3rd District.

Unofficial results show Lujan defeating Santa Fe developer Don Wiviott in the contest for the seat held by Rep. Tom Udall.

It was a hard-fought contest. Lujan’s campaign had political muscle because his father is the powerful speaker of the state House of Representatives. Wiviott pumped more than $1.3 million of his own money into the race.

Udall, a Democrat, is leaving his House seat to run for U.S. Senate.
