Golf fundraiser true group effort

The Cannon Spouses’ Club  hosted a fundraiser golf tournament at Cannon Air Force Base last Friday.

Funds will provide scholarships for military families and support for other charitable activities with most of the money destined to go right back into the surrounding communities.

As a member of the CSC, I had the opportunity to assist the planners for this event, mostly with sponsorship.

The reputation for both Clovis and Portales was one of steadfast embrace for the Cannon population, a fact well known even before our family’s arrival last June. But we were unsure of the ability to garner support given the  first-time nature of this event.

No doubt the success of the tournament was based on several factors, including the work of CSC volunteers under the leadership of two wives whose husbands are assigned to Cannon. But without question it was also due to the support of Clovis-Portales businesses and organizations that exceeded all expectations.

More than 100 contributors, including small and large businesses, academic institutions, veterans groups, and even individuals generously stepped up as sponsors and gift donors, and numerous came out to play and enjoy a unique camaraderie with military, civilian and family members of the Cannon communities.

We raised about $9,000 — three times our goal.

I know my views are shared by many. Clovis and Portales stepped up to support military families at an unparalleled and extraordinary level — one I have never observed before in my 30 years of military service at bases throughout the world.

This community and base relationship is strong and truly noteworthy. Thank you, Clovis and Portales, for making this a good place to be stationed!

Realtor convention shows hospitality

I had the opportunity to visit Clovis last week, attending the REALTOR Association of New Mexico spring meeting.  The event was held at the Clovis Civic Center, which is a beautiful facility for such a meeting.

I would like to express my appreciation to the Clovis  Association of REALTORS for the wonderful hospitality and a very special thank you to the guys at the Norman Petty Studio for the wonderful tour they provided our group.

Thank you also to Mayor Gayla Brumfield and Wes Graham for the informative tour of Clovis.

It has been at least 10 years since I was in Clovis. It is wonderful to see the growth along with the efforts to preserve the historical buildings in town.

Thank you all for your wonderful hospitality.
