In recognition of the sexual assault awareness day of action today, several local coffee shops will be serving  cups specially marked with a prevention message, according to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners spokeswoman Amber Hamilton.

Coffee house employees will also be handing out cards with information and prevention tips, she said.

Businesses, schools and churches have been asked to place awareness messages on their marquees, Hamilton said.

SANE, a part of the 9th Judicial District, provides free, confidential medical and forensic services to victims of sexual assault and child sexual abuse in Roosevelt and Curry counties.

In 2007, SANE reported an increase of 30 percent in examinations from 2006.

Hamilton said victims of sexual violence can dispatch a SANE nurse at any time by calling 911 or through the hospital emergency rooms in Clovis and Portales.
