Clovis students to compete in geography bee
Three Clovis students will compete Friday in the New Mexico Geography Bee in Albuquerque
Adam Niece of Marshall Middle School, Kassie Waller from Mesa Elementary and Lucas Donaldson from Yucca Middle School won local competitions to advance to the state level. The winner will receive $100, a National Geographic globe and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. for the national competition in May.
James Bickley students win first place in structure competition
A team of fourth-graders from James Bickley Elementary’s Gifted and Talented program took first place in the state SWITCH competition on March 15.
The competition required students to build a structure without pre-planning that could hold weight on two sides.
The competition is part of the Destination Imagination program that fosters creativity by making children solve challenges.
The first place team, consisting of Tyler Kendricks, Rachel Martinez, Clara Nutt, India Cooper and Abby McCarty, qualifies for a global tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., on May 21-24.
Carol Littlejohn, the gifted and talented instructor, said the team is working to raise money to attend the finals. She can be contacted at James Bickley at 769-4450.
Littlejohn took a total of four other teams to the competition.
• A fifth-grade team from Bickley placed fifth;
• A sixth grade team from Bickley placed third;
• A fourth-grade team from Ranchvale placed third;
• A sixth grade team from Ranchvale placed fourth.
Blackburn part of winning Texas Tech teams
Jennifer Blackburn of Grady was a member of a Texas Tech meat evaluation team that took home a national championship from the 2008 National Meat Animal Evaluation Contest, held in Oklahoma City.
The team won the market animal, breeding and meat divisions and also placed second in the communications division. Blackburn was also a member of Texas Tech’s livestock judging team that placed first at a judging competition at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Texico students place first at state FCCLA
Two Texico teams placed first at the state FCCLA contest on March 13-14.
Annette Torres and Jennifer Shirley placed first in the senior illustrated talk.
Monique Pena, Lisa Vidal and Kaci Simmons captured first in senior chapter service project.
Nationals will be held July 13-17 in Orlando, Fla.
