Clovis, NM - April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual violence is a difficult issue that many residents face. One in every three women and one in every six men will experience some type of sexual violence in their lifetime. It is estimated that roughly two-thirds of victims never report. SANE of the Ninth Judicial District provides free, confidential medical and forensic services to victims of sexual assault and child sexual abuse in Roosevelt and Curry County. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners seek to provide a safe haven to all victims of sexual violence and to help them in becoming a survivor.

"In 2007, victims' seeking SANE services increased more than 30 percent from 2006," said Amber Hamilton, SANE of the Ninth Judicial District Administrator. "This increase is directly attributed to program awareness and to the incredible team of law enforcement, prosecution, and community organizations whom work together to assist victims."

SANE is partnering with organizations in Clovis and Portales to raise awareness and have asked those businesses, churches, and schools with marquee signs to display "Prevent Sexual Violence" during April.

"We are focused on raising awareness in our communities this year by creating a buzz about sexual violence," stated Hamilton. "When businesses have ‘Prevent Sexual Violence' on their marquee signs, we know it will encourage residents to talk about this issue at home, at work, at church, and with friends. This type of discussion will help prevent future sexual violence."

Coffeehouses are also helping to raise program awareness on the National Day of Action. On April 3, they will distribute their products in cups imprinted with "Prevent Sexual Violence". They are also handing out palm cards illustrating ways to prevent sexual violence in our workplaces and in our communities.

"We expect more than 700 coffee cups to get into residents' hands further increasing awareness," added Hamilton.
Victims of sexual violence can dispatch a SANE nurse at any time by calling 911 or through the hospital emergency rooms in Clovis and Portales.  For more information, contact Amber Hamilton at 226.SANE.
