Meetings watch: county/city luncheon
Published: Tuesday, June 19th, 2007
County, city and local officials reported on the following at Tuesday’s city/county luncheon:
• Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm said the district will have about 100 fewer
students in the coming school year because of Cannon Air Force Base’s transition to its new mission as home to the 16th Special Operations Wing. Seidenwurm also said this year’s Clovis High graduating class received about $2 million in scholarships.
• Curry County Manager Dick Smith said improvements are being made to the Curry County Fairgrounds. He said foundation work has started for the Events Center.
“We still have a hole in the ground and it’s getting deeper every day,” Smith said.
• Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ernie Kos said two legislative meetings will take place in the Clovis Civic Center: A water and natural resources interim committee on July 16 and 17, and the Interim Tax Committee meeting on July 25 and 26.
Kos also said the Chamber office’s museum has a new addition: a gun used in the Tate-Bohannan gunfight.
• David Richards, Committee of 50 chairman, said Cannon Appreciation Day this year will be a little different since a large number of airmen are currently deployed. The event is set for Aug. 24.
• Clovis Industrial Development Corp. Executive Director Chase Gentry said efforts are ongoing to obtain additional tenants in the Clovis Industrial Park.
• Clovis City Manager Joe Thomas said the city will start new projects with the passage of an infrastructure tax. He said a street repair program will start by July.
• Clovis Fire Chief Ray Westerman said a fireworks ban will not be in effect this year.
• Mayor David Lansford said testimony by U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D.-N.M., about the Ute Water Project will take place in Clovis on Aug. 6. Lansford is chairman of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water Authority.
