ONE HUNDRED TINY SHOPPERS will converge on Clovis’ Wal-Mart at the crack of dawn Sunday. The children, who are local third-, fourth- and fifth-graders, will be treated to a 6 a.m. Christmas shopping spree by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Frank Romero, who has been an Eagle since 1988, said 100 children are selected annually to participate in the event. “We interview the parents and kids at the house to determine if they should be allowed to go on the shopping spree,” Romero said. EACH CHILD IS GIVEN $100 TO SPEND. “They can get anything they want,” Romero said. Although the children have free rein to choose items, Romero said it is rare for a child to choose gifts only for himself or herself. “The majority of them buy for their parents and siblings first,” he said. THE 61-YEAR-OLD CLOVIS RESIDENT said the shopping trip never fails to brighten his day. “It makes me feel really good because their hearts are in the right place,” Romero said. “It really puts me in the Christmas spirit.” Reporter’s notebook was compiled by CNJ staff writer Tonya Fennell.
