Visitors to Rock Staubus gymnasium at Clovis High these days are quick to note a change of color in the border surrounding the basketball court. “Cool. It’s not blue,” said Aimee Hilburn, a recent CHS grad and basketball player, on Monday. Indeed, although the school was prompted to refinish the floor for the second time in less than five years, the end result should be pleasing to fans of the color purple. The maple wood court recently had its old colors and graphics sanded off and a team led by Clovis Community College art teacher Bruce DeFoor then repainted the floor. All that’s left for the court, whose makeover began on June 12th, is to be covered with four coats of a lacquer finish. Clovis High athletic director Brian Stacy said that he’s trying to standardize the colors and the Wildcat logos used by the school. Stacy said that, when he visited one local paint store, seven different shades of purple had been ordered from the high school for a variety of projects. Not one of those, however, was on the Rock Staubus floor over the last four years as the gym’s playing surface had been trimmed in a color more blue than purple, with washed-out white accents. “We tried to clean it up to where we got rid of a lot of that, well, fluff is what I call it,” Stacy said. “This has got straight lines, straight colors - there’s only three colors (purple, white and orange) on the court, so it’ll be easier to touch up if we ever need to.” Touching up the surface, particularly after parts of the movie “Believe In Me” were filmed at the gym, is cited as one of the primary reasons for the resurfacing. “They did some damage to the floor. There were a lot of scapes and scratches on it. A lot was on the baseline and in the middle, on the cat (logo),” Clovis girls basketball coach Miles Watters said. “There were just a number of places where the paint had been completely scraped off. They tried to patch it up, but they never did patch it correctly. A guy came in last summer and tried to match it and he wasn’t even close.” Stacy said that some reservations were expressed by school system officials, especially because the gym floor had been resurfaced only a few years before. “Some questions came up, but when you came in and looked at some of the damage that had been done and the patchwork that we tried to do, it was just getting worse and worse,” Stacy said. Basketball isn’t the only sport played at the gym, Stacy noted in pointing out that the volleyball court lines are now colored white. “The volleyball lines were pea green and it made it very difficult for the referees to see,” he said. Besides the three main colors and the light brown of the maple wood, the only alternative color - other than some black and white a lines - is a silver used to make the large Wildcat logo appear to be bolted to the floor. Stacy said that Clovis High pays an extremely nominal fee ($1 for every two years) to Kansas State to borrow the logo. The only stipulation is that the logo has to be altered in some way if it’s used for the floor of a basketball gym. “The cat is 33-feet across - a whole lot bigger. I wanted it to stand out for the home crowd,” Stacy said. “Everything is crisper and cleaner, streamlined, no airbrush."
