Racers getting ready for Soap Box Derby
Published: Thursday, June 8th, 2006
Young racers are revving up for the fifth annual Clovis Soap Box Derby. The event, which is sponsored by the Clovis Rotary Club, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Sycamore Street. According to Director Larry Erwin, 15 participants ages 10 to 18 will vie for the right to represent Clovis in the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, in July. Since the vehicles rely on gravity for power, the young racers will compete on a manmade hill that will begin at Yucca Junior High and finish at 14th Street. Erwin said the racers will reach speeds up to 20 mph in kit cars painted a rainbow of colors. “This year we have a patriotic car,” Erwin said, “with the entire nose painted with the American flag.” According to Erwin, this year’s racers include two sets of 11-year-old twins and several girls as well.
