Yucca Junior High advisor honored Amy Garcia, chapter advisor for the Yucca Junior High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, has been selected the New Mexico Master Advisor of the Year, according to a press release from the Clovis Municipal Schools. The award is given annually to outstanding advisers who operate co-curricular chapters with a balanced program of work, the press release said. This year, Garcia’s chapter conducted a penny drive to buy gifts for underprivileged children in the community, worked with Relay for Life and helped with the Kiwanis’ Pancake Breakfast, the release said. Scholarships in health care available Scholarships are available for Spanish-speaking, bicultural high school students who want to pursue careers in the health care field, according to a press release from UnitedHealthcare. Funded through the PacificCare Foundation, the scholarships are offered on behalf of the UnitedHealthcare Latino Health Scholars Program, the release said. High school seniors with a minimum 3.0 grade point average who are fluent in Spanish and English are eligible for the $2,000 scholarships. For an application, visit www.pacificarelatino.com. Pre-kindergarten programs lacking Pre-kindergarten programs in New Mexico are not doing well, according to a book released by the National Institute for Early Education Research. Pre-kindergarten enrollment declined in New Mexico from 2004, with just one percent of eligible 4-year-olds enrolled, according to the institute. Program funding decreased from 2004 as well, the institute found. The institute ranked New Mexico 38th among states for its pre-kindergarten program. Cancer group offering aid High school seniors and full-time college students are eligible for the Great West Division Cancer Survivor College Scholarship. The scholarship is to be applied to their next year at an accredited college, university, junior college or vocational college. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of at least 2.5, be full-time students and cancer survivors.
