Clovis man charged with kidnapping
Published: Tuesday, March 28th, 2006
A 24-year-old Clovis man forced his way into a residence at gun point Saturday and held two women and an infant hostage for a short period of time, according to police officials and court records.
David Michael Coehlo walked out of the residence unarmed at about 10:30 p.m. following a prolonged standoff with members of the Clovis police, according to court documents and police.
He is being held on a $135,000 bond at the Curry County Adult Detention Center on multiple felony charges, including kidnapping and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The women told police they escaped with the infant from the 1101 Ross St. residence when Coehlo barricaded himself in the bathroom after he began noticing police activity in the neighborhood, according to Lt. Jim Schoeffel of the Clovis Police Department.
Police were in the area investigating three reports of shots being fired at about 8:30 p.m. from a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle driven by Coehlo, according to Schoeffel.
Officers located the vehicle, which is registered to a Mary Coehlo, parked in the area of 1101 Ross St. when the kidnap victims approached the officers and told them a man had entered their residence at gun point, according to a press release issued by the police.
The women told police Coehlo banged on the front door and they saw he had a gun. Once inside, he pointed the gun at the victims, they said.
Clovis’ police team was called to the scene and a negotiator spoke with the suspect. After first trying to escape out a window, the suspect walked unprompted out the back door of the residence, where he was forcible taken into custody, Schoeffel said.
Police recovered a 9 mm handgun hidden under a pillow in the residence, according to police. The gun was reported stolen to Clovis police in September.
Schoeffel said he was uncertain of the relation between David and Mary Coehlo.
Police said David Coehlo could face additional charges.
Mary Coehlo could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
